Gun For Glory shooting academy to organise national level shooting championship
The academy by ace shooter Gagan Narang will host the championship under NRAI’s aegis

Pune, July 21: With an aim to provide a platform to India’s shooting talent, Gagan Narang Sports Promotion Foundation will be organising a National level Shooting Championship at their academy at Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Mahalunge-Balewadi, Pune from August 3 to 9.

Gun For Glory, an academy by ace shooter and Olympian Gagan Narang will be hosting the championship, with National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) at their premises. While directors of the academy, Gagan Narang and Pawan Singh briefed the media about the championship, former captain of Indian hockey team and CEO of Olympic Gold Quest, Viren Rasquinha launched the official website of the academy www.gunforglory.in on Thursday.

“Through the academy, we are aiming to give our Indian shooters a platform, where they can compete with other talented shooters. The competition is recognised by the National Rifle Association of India, and the winners’ scores will be considered for National Championships and selection trials,” said Gagan Narang.
“This will be the first-of-its-kind championship where shooters will not just get warm handshakes but also allow them to win and take home some really good prizes from our elite sponsors. There are prizes worth Rs 35 lakh at stake,” he added.

Talking about the initiative, secretary of NRAI, Rajiv Bhatia said: “ We are pleased that Gun for Glory shooting academy is organising such a largescale championship, which is something even the state associations struggle to do
Also for the first time the competition will cater across all levels of players, this will be a unique opportunity for the state/national level players to watch, interact and learn from our International shooters in action.

The championship will be first in India that will benefit the participants in all categories. In all, the competition will see around 3,000 participants from all over the country. Having been recognised by the NRAI, the championship will be held in two categories -- National Rule (NR) and International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) rule.

Shooters scoring the required points in the NR category, will qualify for national championship, while those contesting in the ISSF category, will be considered for Selection for the 2012 National squad.

Apart from the championship for registered shooters, there will be a competition for the spectators, and fans of shooting sport which would be used as a talent hunting competition. This part of the championship is aimed to spot and encourage raw talent. The Talent Hunt will be held from on August 4-8 at the academy’s premises. This will be an open to all competition where anybody can participate in the championship and if the shooter scores the required points, s/he will graduate to the next round. In all, there will be four rounds, final round will be held along with the Gun for Glory Championship with National and International level shooters.


Prizes at stake:
In all there will be prize worth Rs 35 lakh, which will be at stake. German gun manufacturer Walther, will be providing rifles to winners of select catagories, Capapie will provide discount vouchers to all medal winners, Holiday Inn will be the hospitality partner for the championship, Oakley, the official eye wear partner for the championship, will give prizes to selected winners, while ammunition manufacturer Eley, from England has come on board as the official ammunition partner with the academy.However it hasnt been a cake walk finding Indian Companies to sponsor the event.

Apart from the above mentioned prizes, Gold (10gm, 24K), Silver and Bronze medals to 1st, 2nd and 3rd rank holders respectively for the below mentioned events:

1. Air Rifle Men(ISSF)
2. Air Rifle Women(ISSF)
3. Air Pistol Men(ISSF)
4. Air Pistol Women(ISSF)

Other Prizes for events:
1. Max. Inner 10s
2. Max. 100 series
3. Top 10 in Open Fan shooting competition
4. Champion of champions
5. Champion of champions runner up

In all, there will be 46 events where all events will have medals, and special prizes.

The complex provides all world class infrastructures which are required to prepare a shooter to meet world challenges. The academy will provide all features needed to build a champion shooter such as Foreign Coaches, Foreign gunsmith, Sports Injury Management Team, Physiotherapist, Yoga Guru, Dietician, Masseur, Gun testing facility, utilisation of SCATT, video analysers, Equipment control & Psychologist among other. The customised training plan will be designed by academy’s eminent foreign coaches on the basis of SWOT analysis.
The academy has Chief Pistol Coach Mr Anatolii Piddubnyi from Ukraine, who has served as the chief coach of the USSR in the 1970s and the 1980s and has two Olympic Champions, two World Record Holders, one Olympic Record Holder, 13 World Champions as his students and has also been the chief trainer in countries like Ukraine, Poland, Portugal, Brazil, etc. He has an experience of over 50 years in the sport of shooting and we believe he would be very instrumental in helping the shooting sport in India. Also Mr Piddubnyi has been a personal coach of ace pistol shooter Ronak Pandit, who has represented India over 50 times in International Competitions and has won over 40 International medals including the Gold at the Commonwealth Games, Silver at the Asian Games and six Gold Medals at the Asian Shooting Championships.
The academy also has Chief Rifle Coach in Mr Lurii Mikhalkin, who has served as the head coach of Tajikistan from 1965 to 1987 and has 5 Gold medals in different events on Arabic Championships, New record holder in free rifle event and has also been the Head coach in countries like Iraq, Russia, Egypt, etc. He was the Master of shooting sport of USSR and repeated prize winner in All-Union competitions. He has coaching experience of over 41 years and 13 years of shooting experience in the sport of shooting. We believe he would be very instrumental in helping the shooting sport in India.
Gun For Glory also has a Gunsmith, Mr Anatolii Fedorchenko, a citizen of the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan. He has a Master’s degree from Kazakh State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports. He is a Master of maintenance and repairing of sports weapons. He has a coaching experience 20 years in sport of shooting as well as has an experience of 15 years as a Gunsmith and is adept at making personal grips for sport’s pistols and stocks for shotguns.

There are some star studded prize ceremonies expected as well but with or without that, this promises to be a great event.
