Revolver cartridges are rimmed and pistol cartridges are rimless. Details are available here http://ofbindia.nic.in/products/data/am ... /sc/12.htm

Classified as .32 S&W Long for revolver (could also be Short, in which case the nomenclature, I believe, is .32 S&W). Generally an unjacketed lead bullet with a rimmed cartridge, while for pistol it is .32 ACP. The bullets are usually copper or cupro-nickel jacketed and the cartridge is rimless. The rimmed/ rimless affair is basically designed for the extraction process in both types of firearms due to their differing operational mechanisms.

Bullet diameter is generally about .309 in. and muzzle velocity for .32 ACP (pistol) cartridge is about 900 fps (approx.) and for .32 S&W Long(Revolver) cartridge bullet diameter is generally about .312 in. and muzzle velocity is about 760 fps (approx.) Although shorter, the .32 ACP is a higher pressure cartridge than the .32 S&W Long.
