Desperate moves ostensiiblly to contain heinous Crimes

Post by pkaran » Tue Jun 01, 2021 12:50 pm

Sir/Madam,

Instead of taking pre-emptive measures to contain heinous crimes in our country, it is unfortunate that our policymakers resort to such half measures
as:

(i) Obscurantism of Vital Crime-data:

Various National Dailies report that vital crime data are being dexterously manipulated to present a situation of complacency and subdue the increasing agony among people, at a time when crime is steadily on the increase across India.

Deccan Herald: Excerpts:

“There is criticism that the reports have been deliberately suppressed. There have also been charges of manipulation of data in the past.
Transparency is an important requirement of democratic governance and it is wrong to withhold and suppress unfavourable data. The crime
records data provides key inputs for policymaking...”

The Hindu: Excerpts:

The National Crime Records Bureau, India’s official source of crime data, is systematically undercounting virtually every crime in India on
account of a statistical shortcoming, The Hindu has learnt.

The Times of India: Excerpts:

“Repressing unfavourable data solves no problems; on the contrary, it can make them worse. It renders public authorities complacent and
denies actionable intelligence to policymakers

“Without reliable statistics there is no way of knowing which states and cities are getting safer or more dangerous, whether sexual offences are
on the wane or rise”.

(ii) Passing Death Penalty to prevent the rape of preteens.

Unable to contain the proliferation of crimes, particularly those heinous crimes committed against children, our policy-makers have
passed the Death Penalty in a desperate move.

Sir, the Death Penalty is not going to prevent the rape of children. Instead, it will further aggravate the severity of crime where the victim
is killed to eliminate evidence by testifying. Those familiar with the fundamentals of jurisprudence know that IT IS NOT THE SEVERITY OF PUNISHMENT THAT ACTS AS A DETERRENT, BUT ITS INEVITABILITY!

The increasing number of rapes and murder of preteens even after the promulgation of the law is testimony to it.

Criime is the Barometer of Governance Crime is the barometer of the quality of governance, and publication of its data keeps the public informed about the performance of the criminal justice delivery system.
