The best in .22 LR

1) The Ruger Mk-II. the suppressed version of which is also used by the Navy SEALs
2) Cold Woodsman
3) Colt Ace, modeled on the .45 ACP chambered 1911

Assumptions:

1. Free import is possible.
2. 0.22 LR/short/long or any variant is ok
3. Budget is not an issue.

Categories:

1. Self defense (don't laugh)
2. Plinking
3. Target Shooting

Much better than the Colt Ace conversion is the Unit 1 .22 conversion kit by Marvel... target grade accuracy without any mods required. Downside is, last I heard they have 6 month waiting plus they cannot be imported. Also like most current .22 conversions for the 1911 it does not have a last round slide lock back. The positives (besides outstanding accuracy) are:
a) Option for ordering a threaded barrel - for accessories like muzzle brake etc.
b) Standard adjustable sights and option for a combo adjustable iron sights + scope rail
c) Very tolerant of different types of .22 ammo

There is another option from Tactical Solutions. On the plus side it has last round lockback, on the downside the reported accuracy is not at par with Unit 1 from Marvel, but it is still supposedly better than the other .22 conversions. The waiting list is also shorter for these ones.

There are of course plenty of other "plinker" grade .22 kits for the 1911 - chief amongst them are the Ciener, Kimber, Wilson Combat (both used to be supplied by Ciener but now build their own loosely based on the same design), etc. Accuracy from all of these is similar, and by and large they require high/ hyper vel .22 ammo to work reliably.

Cheers!
Abhijeet

Ah Yes, the IOF revolver is an excellent piece of work and has a tremendous surprise value, when used as a paperweight!

My current .22 handgun is a 6" S&W K22.

The one that I've always lusted after would be a 6" Match Target:

Looking at the prices now, I sure do wish I'd have bought one back in the early 80s...

I would go for .32 IOF revolver, not so costly, not so long waiting time and useful as a gun.
