I did write to Walther and they replied back promptly by saying that since they get too much enquiries about the serial numbers and their manufacturing dates they will not be able to comply for ordinary citizens and would do it only for authorities.

Sometimes serial numbers can be found online to indicate the time of manufacture. I gave this a try for you.

It seems as if there is a range of serial numbers for the PP and a separate range for the PPK: in other words, one would need to know whether the gun in question was a PP or PPK.

I'm no expert on these guns, but I am not sure that either of these two were offered in 22 LR. There seems to be a PPK/S and a PPK-L that were chambered for 22 LR. Also, there seems to be other variations. Check out the wiki here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walther_PP
