I did write to Walther and they replied back promptly by saying that since they get too much enquiries about the serial numbers and their manufacturing dates they will not be able to comply for ordinary citizens and would do it only for authorities.

Sometimes serial numbers can be found online to indicate the time of manufacture. I gave this a try for you.

It seems as if there is a range of serial numbers for the PP and a separate range for the PPK: in other words, one would need to know whether the gun in question was a PP or PPK.

I'm no expert on these guns, but I am not sure that either of these two were offered in 22 LR. There seems to be a PPK/S and a PPK-L that were chambered for 22 LR. Also, there seems to be other variations. Check out the wiki here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walther_PP

As is so often the case with firearms, one must be sure to be exact in identifying markings and data -- shortcuts and a lack of attention to detail is seldom rewarded with results.

I eventually ended up buying the Walther PPK , very proud of it.
It has an Eagle with a N underneath the eagle embossed on it, could anyone enlighten me on this ? Does this give a hint on its age ?
It also has a 66 or 99 embossed on the cartridge discharge steel plate.
I understand these are antique weapons and therefore must have a interesting history, anyone a true PPK enthusiast could help.
