Hi another question is the 31-1 j frame .32 cal a round butt or square butt??? were they mode in both varients?? ie . round butt or square butt

This is going to stray a bit from the main theme, but excessive and continuous dry-firing of a center-fire is also not recommended. The un-cushioned impact of the firing pin shoulder against the inside face of the frame/bolt/breech block will eventually lead to work-hardening and brittleness of the parts involved, and eventual breakage. Occasional dry-firing is fine, but daily prolonged practice sessions are better avoided. Cheers.

S&W model 30-1 in .32 S&W Long is only found in the round butt version, while the S&W model 31-1 is the square butt version of the same gun.

Actually models 30-1 and 31-1 are descendants of the original S&W .32 caliber "Hand Ejector" model which was built on the "I" frame.

So i d then in this case will have a square butt is that correct. How to identify?? is the round butt rounded off at bottom????

You have no means of knowing how much this particular revolver was dry fired before you bought it so take it easy mate and avoid dry firing it frequently . TwoRivers has already answered your query well.
