Original Oberndorf Mauser Sporter

Post by herb » Sat Apr 05, 2008 11:17 pm

Hi folks, Is there any interest in original oberndorf sporting rilfes in India? I don't see any discussion or photos of them in this forum. During all my years in India I remember seeing only one in a 10.75x68 owned by a retired tea estate manager in Assam, he did mention taking lot of game with it during his days as the manager (pre-1960). I assume that people prefer enfields to mausers in India (British association).

Posting some photos of mine in 9x57.

I've always had a soft spot for the Oberndorf Mauser sporters but only got to handle one last December.

Thanks for the pics.

Thanks for the great photos and congrats. There are few members who own Mausers and another member who is on sabbatical from this board is a great connoisseur and walking encyclopedia of Mauser guns.

thanks everyone, glad you liked the photos.

Indian - Original oberndorf rifles (not sporterized military rifles) don't come up for sale very often & prices are dictated by supply, they stopped making them many decades ago and guns in good condition with matching serial number on all parts are difficult to come by, atleast where I live. I have seen them go for anything between $2k & $5K. I would say $1.5K for one in good condition would be a steal and I will buy it without thinking twice. Check this one for sale at a ridiculous price.

Please go on to this Mauser Site. Very informative. It'll tell you about pre WW1 models as well.

The new Mauser rifles at www.mauser.de are very expensive, the M98 Magnum sells in canada for approx $14K+taxes. Some people don't consider them as Oberndorf mausers as the actions are made by Prechtl (www.golmatic.de) if I am not mistaken.
