If you can convince them that you are being threatened by these chaps, you will certainly be granted one

Competitive Shooting/ Sports Category has the highest probability in my opinion. At the time of renewal they might ask you to produce some proof that you have actually pursued it.

It means to apply for sporting rifle a person need to have sports background preferably with registration in sports club, or the other reason could be protection of agriculture farm from animals.
Self security would not be appropriate reason for IOF Rifle 022

Not necessarily. You can always state that you are starting now and want to pursue it. Read this topic http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14520

Even though this was for a shotgun application, in theory, you could do the same for NPB rifle or .22.

On Sunday, I went to an arms dealer who told me the price for a new IOF .22 would be Rs 47000/- This was the cheapest rifle they had available. I did not ask about the ammunition prices but only the price of the rifle!

It doesn't seem all that expensive, considering it is Rs 30,000 at the website and other taxes would apply.

How much does .22 ammo cost?

Ah, thanks. What about SB? I shot my uncle's rifle with SB ammo, (not SK, but SB) and it was super accurate. I still have the shells from my first ever firearm experience and I read only yesterday that it was SB

Guys not hijacking or anything, bought two boxes of kf for 3000 and was wondering a .22 stinger round costs Rs 6.5, a yellow jacket Rs 6 in the US.
So why and how does a KF round cost Rs 30 here   .
These IOF guys must have a profit of rs 16 PER ROUND even if they sell it to the dealers at 18 bucks.

There is one arms dealer in pithoragarh, Mahara arms. There is one .22 winchester with him. Last the asking price was around 60K. Also speak to Narender of Himalayan Arms, Dehradun. He has .22 IOF.
