on my last visit to INDIA in august 2008 I came accross a gentleman in Bhopal who owned a beautiful rifle, guess what:
He had a FRASER, England(.315) 8mmR austrian Man, a take down model made on Mauser98 engraved action.
It was a beauty although badly kept. As per his knowledge it belonged to some Royalty of earlier Bhopal State.
This was the most beautiful and graceful .315 indian I came accross.

I believe the .315 ctg is the same as the Austrian 8x50R Mannlicher. This ctg was adopted in Austria-Hungary in 1888 loaded with black powder ,244 gr bt at 1750 fps, and later in 1893 loaded with smokeless ,2000fps. It was used in M1888 and 1895 Mannlicher rifles as well as Scharzlose MGs.
British gunmakers started to make sporting rifles in this calibre when the .303" was outlawed for civilian use in India c1905.

Lets not rehash the topic discussed to its hilt and which lead to some pretty interesting exchnages. Conduct a search on this site and you can look up all the info on this bullets history..This website lost one too many good members to its origin's discussion.

You are right on this. The .315 is based on the 8x50R Austrian Mannlicher.Whatever slight variation is their,is due to manufacturing tolerances.

A large number of BSA made Enfields in this caliber were imported into the country. They are marked as 8mm.They easily chamber and fire the KF .315 cartridge.

Vikram,

If it is not too much trouble, can you confirm if the magazine cut off in this rifle is the same as the one for the 303.Thanks

No problem, Winnie. I emailed the seller asking if they could confirm the year of manufacture. They don't know. Will email them about this and get back.

Hi Winnie,

I received an email from the seller stating that the magazine capacity is 10 rounds.Nice, isn't it?BTW, they don't stock the ammo for this calibre.

Vikram: "they don't stock the ammo..." Not likely, since it has been obsolete (outside India) for a long time. Magazine capacity is ten, for the .303. Any and all that I have ever seen had the reguIar .303 magazine, not a deeper one. It will hold seven, barely, of the .315. But they'd need the shells to check that, and realize it's a fatter cartridge. Cheers.
