This a question fraught with lots of ifs and buts and gaalis. If RFI can develop , from the ground up, a .308 SMLE action which is one of the most sought after, world wide, why not Mod the SLR?
The answer may lie with the babudom pocket lining, kickbacks and trade unions.
Somebody like our own Cottage Cheese, who has years of hands on experience with the Service small arms and knows the nitty gritty, will probably be the right person to talk about possible improvements.
IMO, can be done, not beyond a normal machinists purview, BUT bottom line is , WHY?
When Crores can be made as bribes and gestures of goodwill to most favoured trading partners ?
And we have plenty of cannon fodder soldiers who can die cursing, trying to live upto their paltans’ mottos, using half assed plastic rifles and underpowered Ammo.
