Could you please take a clearer photo and post it again? The middle word is not clear due to flash burn.It should be possible to find out more about the principality that used it.

Its not in my hands but I will try getting a better one. Someone I have talked to have said one word is "Patgir". I don't know if that is right.

I thought it would be Virpur- Kharedi state, some things with bird, fire and 6 "rings" were all the same but I talked to someone there and they said no.

Bwana.be,

This is what I managed to find out from people who know:

That's the Crest of Dumraon. A Zamindari Estate in Bihar.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumraon

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumraon_Raj

The motto on the escutcheon: Dharma Rakshartha Parmar

If and when you get the rifle, please do share complete photos of the rifle, including the serial numbers. It is possible that one of the responders is a descendant of the family and he likes to know more about the rifle. Thank you.

Bwana.be,

Lovely rifle. Which calibre is it? Is it made in 1925? The gentleman to whose family this rifle belonged asked for a few detailed photos. He said that he would try to establish which member of the family ordered it. That may reveal what JPU stands for.

I think the gentleman from Dumraon would probably be able to tell.

Would have been interesting to know and see some hunting photos :)

JPU crest has come there later and nothing to do with India. Yes made 1925

H&H are moving so they could not open the ledger now because its packed away for a few months.
