Frankly, Winnie, I have always wondered the same thing. My suspicion is that it was named after a Confederate commander because the base is located in the south. Being observant of regional sensitivities can make congressmen and voters happy, and I suspect the name has more to do with that than with any recognition of military accomplishment.
