Slut, the pointer pig, J Landseer, 1805.

William Barker Daniel’s Rural Sports tells us that she was called Slut ‘in consequence of soiling herself in a Bog.’ She lived wild but her ‘owner’ taught her to act like a pointer dog and she accompanied him on his hunting expeditions and would point and retrieve as well as a dog. Slut was slaughtered when she was ten years old, which Daniel said was ‘animal murder’.

More can be read on Slut at this page. Makes a very interesting read. Do give it a go.

Start at page-64.

The intelligence and smelling ability of a pig are well known, and as nGrewal points out, the French train them to find truffles.

As pointers and retrievers, they have been used in the UK, New Zealand and the US, however, the issue has always been the stigma attached to them.

On the other hand, a GSP is any day a prettier picture if not as efficient. Somewhat like why we prefer blondes . . . .

Wonder if the other hunters shot the pig instead.
