Hi marksman,
Your attempt in converting a flat file into a good looking knife is commendable...
I agree that there is no compelling need to 'heat treat' the file....as a certain amount of hardening & tempering must have already gone into making the original file....
However see the picture below, which would give you some idea as to what can be achieved - from a file to a knife!

Why the cutout in the handle? An uncut handle with holes for the brass pins would make it easier to fix the handle scales.

Took me 4 days and 2 inches of file to get the shape, today also i had to shave down half inches to get the shape, will be trying to complete the shape by tomorrow..
