Hello & Namaste Folks,

I stumbled across this post while looking for expert advice on purchasing an original finely crafted useable khukri from Nepal. I am here for couple of days and could really use some clarity from the experts here.

-Is it advisable to sign up for one of those ‘ Make your own Khukri’ lessons here in KTM? Is it too touristy or the real deal?

-Which place would you advise to pick up a nice, strong, useable, long lasting, Original Khukri( not a showpiece)? Is Khukri House the best bet ?

- Is it a problem taking Khukri in unaccompanied baggage?
-Do I declare at Nepal Customs and India Customs?
-What is the legal limit of blade size( length) allowed on the Khukri? For me who is in love with blades Bigger and stronger is always better but don’t want to be on the wrong side of law in India.


Little about my myself:
I have been collecting swords and knives since I was a kid and have a natural affinity to them, it’s like Everyone of these has a Soul which I connect to and it’s very reassuring to have them. It’s like I literally fall in Love with my metals( this May sound funny to some).I am also into farming and a very outdoorsy person & put these to regular use in very tough and hard conditions.

Would really appreciate any advice on my queries!!

Back to forum after long, just saw your post, there are some very good smiths in Nepal, you can reach VK at Heritage, KHHI, Purna Darnal, Kailash Blades, Barun Bairali, Neem Tenji. All top notch. Stay away from Tourist Traps in Thamel for Kukri's.

Since I posted the original article, I have delved much deeper into the Kukri makers and the above it the top crop as far as I am concerned.

I know this answer is a few months late, but better late than never.

This is probably not the right thread to ask this question. I am guessing that your question is with reference to the Canadian legal situation about 10 round Mags in an AR-15?

My understanding - any magazine that is manufactured specifically for a centerfire semi-auto handgun, 10 round capacity, if it fits a rifle is legal to use. Eg. the 10-round LAR-15 Magazine can be used in an AR-15 as they are pistol mags being used in a semi-auto centerfire rifle. Similarly, a .50 Beowulf 5-round magazine can be used in an AR-15 rifle and it will hold 13 cartridges of .223!

Under Canadian law it’s not what firearm the magazine is used in but what firearm the magazine was designed for, that determines legal capacity. For example, the 10 round capacity magazine designed for the RRA LAR-15 pistol is permitted in use in any firearm, including rifles, that accepts AR-15 type magazines. Another example would be the Thureon Defense carbines using 10 round GLOCK handgun magazines. As these magazines were designed specifically for pistols, which have a 10 round legal capacity, it is not relevant that they can be used in other firearm types.

The Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 can legally only hold 10 rounds as the magazine was originally designed for the M&P15-22 handgun. Even though it is a 22 rimfire rifle, the magazine was designed for use in a pistol and therefore is limited to 10 rounds.

The same goes for the factory Ruger 10/22 25 round magazines. These magazines are limited to 10 rounds as they are also for the Ruger Charger pistol. However, aftermarket 10/22 mags such as the Butler Creek models have no such restriction placed on them, as they are not marketed as pistol magazines. This makes them legal to use in both rifles and the Charger pistol.

The M1 Garand is allowed to have 8 rounds even though it is a semi-automatic centerfire rifle. This is because the Garand falls into the category of specific exemptions, along with the Lewis Gun and the Luger snail drum magazines, etc.

Handgun magazines are manufactured to hold 10 rounds of the specific round they were chambered for. These magazines may hold more rounds of a different caliber and function in a different model of handgun. For example, a Beretta 96 .40 S&W magazine will hold 12 rounds of 9mm and function fine in a model 92 Beretta. This is perfectly legal under Canadian firearms law.

At the end of the day, magazine capacity restrictions are dependent on what the Canadian Firearms Center classifies as pistol or rifle magazines. The onus is upon you to make sure your magazines fall within the legal guidelines of the law.
