Thanks for the reply Mack The Knife.Was thinking of getting one made.Lugging along a 3' rod is not exactly fun.Have a couple of those of sectioned wooden rods lying around.However they are very old and though I use them, considering their age,I am always apprehensive that one might break while cleaning. Have para cord lying around and a piece of 12mm brass rod.Will make a trip to the machinist.

Anyone know where does one pick up silica gel in any quantity? Try shops that sell lab equipment like test tubes etc. Alternatively photography equipment shops are your best bet.

With a .22LR you generally wouldnt want to clean it until you start seeing a degradation in accuracy.
I clean mine every 1500 - 2000 rounds down the barrel. Even then its a quick pacth or two with solvents, and a couple of dry patches. The rifle does take about 10 shots there after to settle down, and allow the wax to coat the barrel.
The only time I would consider oiling the barrel would be if I am not going to be using the rifle for several months. (>6)
Realisitically the chances of doing damage to the rifling via over enthusiastic cleaning out wiegh any potential benifits of vigoursously going at the bore with a brass or nylon brush.
