few drops of singer machine oil and rub with a dry cloth or soft lather to remove the rust. And to protect from rusting light coat of same oil works fine. But for long protection I like to apply a coat of silicone grease and it works great and last long.

In the Indian context...

Kerosene patches...
Brush the bore with the brush dipped in kerosene
Dry patch until dry
Wet patch with kerosene
Dry patch... if it comes out clean, you can Singer oil it.

Else continue with Kerosene and Brush, patches until you get a clean patch.

Keep the barrel well oiled in between shoots. And remember to dry it out before shooting.

You can also use something like Mobil-1 to soak the varous parts for long term storage.
