Glad to be here
Hello Shooters !
This is Chaitanya from Hyderabad. A police officer under training. Started off my shooting career with a wide range of service weapons at the Academy. I'm in love with shooting and enjoy every minute of our firing classes. Now I want to take it up as a sport. IFG seems to be a good place to start to know something about it.

Welcome Chaitanya! We're glad to have you here, and look forward to some of the stories of your shooting and training experiences. As you are under training, do you get to see the guns available in the police arsenals? I am interested to know if there are any of the old SMLE muskets converted to .410 bore single shot. One of these days, I would like to have one. Enjoy the boards and welcome to our merry band.

@timmy,
Thanks !
We dont have any SMLE .410 muskets at the Academy (we train with SMLE MKIII .303 rifles) but I've seen quite a few with reserve police in Maharashtra. They're supposed to be used mainly for law and order situations but they're not preferred as the .410 ball causes really ugly injuries. They go out in large numbers for election duties. Rest of the time, they lie dormant in the armouries. They're maintained well.
Cheers

Welcome Chaitanya. It's a pleasure to see a serving police officer take interest in firearms. Hope you enjoy the banter here!

Interesting line up, especially the Steyr SSG69. Glad to learn the Police actually use these. What about ammo for these? It's 7.62x51, so where does the ammo come from? Imports? Could also be the civilian .308 Win.
I have an IOF .30-06 (7.62x63) and quite enjoy it. Most of the big bore shooters in India use this too.
Was also wondering they teach you weapon tactics and basic gunsmithing.

@Katana,
7.62x51mm NATO M80 type is manufactured locally at Ordnance Factory Varangaon. The same ammo is used for SLRs and LMGs, so it is produced in quite a large number.
The IOF .30-06 seems to be a really popular weapon. But I've never seen one.
We are not trained in gunsmithing but they do teach tactics. A lot of it in fact. After 26/11, there has been increased emphasis on training in special tactics. A very well equipped Special Tactics Wing has been established, thanks to the efforts of Vijay Kumar. We learn the basics of field craft, map reading, tactics in jungle and urban scenarios including tactical movement, ambush and counterambush drills, raids, house/building intervention techniques, CASO etc. The training is very basic but that is all we need at this stage. We'll learn as we go in the field.
