Are you sure it`s .45 calibre ?
I know H&R made .44 calibre revolvers ......

A Colt revolver in .455 ? Should have the words `New Service .455 Eley` stamped on the barrel and is collectible if in good order. Not uncommon - 60,000 were made - but a good gun. The calibre is actually .455 Webley. The revolver was built and issued to British and Empire troops - usually officers - during WWI.
If the H&R is a .44 the gun is actually chambered for the .442 Webley although in the US, the shorter ( and low powered ) .44 Bulldog cartridge was usually substituted. The H&R `American` DA was produced between 1883-1941 and the H&R `Safety Hammer` DA was built between 1890-1941- both according to Wiki. Obviously when first produced the loads were black powder and you should be very careful in establishing the age of the revolver as nitro .442 Webley loads in an early H&R revolver could be unsafe. To my knowledge, neither .442 Webley or .44 Bulldog ammunition has been made for 50 years or more.

This would be the most likely candidate, but Colt also made the Single Action Army, Bisley, and Double Action Army models in .455 Eley, along with the New Service that you mention.

A picture would certainly be nice!

Wow.... 5,334 SAAs sold through the London agency between 1873 and 1912 - I had no idea Timmy.
I had a 1911 in .455 Webley back in the mid`90s briefly - that sold very quickly.

Yes, and I would guess that the big DA Army models are even more rare.

I had a chance to buy one of those New Services that was originally made in .455, but it had the chambers bored to .45 Colt. This was a common thing in the USA to do with these revolvers. I didn't buy it, because it had a .454 bore and Colt had long since changed their barrels to use the .452 size .45 ACP bullet.

Silly me! That was the only affordable New Service I have ever seen! It was in great shape, too. All the others I have seen are either fantastically expensive (not many of those) or they look like they've been used as hammers on roofing jobs for the last 80 years (almost all of the ones I've seen).

They are a very nice, comfortable handgun! I wish I had one.

I once turned down a S&W first model Triple lock because I thought it was too expensive ( it definitely wasn`t ! ) and .44 Special was a weird calibre........ !
By the time I`d checked it out it had sold ..... and I have used a Rossi .44 Sp rifle for foxing. We live and learn.

If you are talking about .455 Webley Auto Mk I ammunition you can probably forget about acquiring ammunition because it hasn`t been commercially made since 1941/2. There might be old stocks around somewhere but it was never exactly common ........ and neither is the Webley Self-Loading Pistol Mk I it was made for ! Any pictures of the pistol would be greatly appreciated because they are pretty rare ... and collectible.
