Give him a break, dude.
He's just starting out.
It takes a while to get everything going and get your finishing down.
At least he's repurposing stuff to make something useful.
One of the fun parts of blacksmithing is that you can take a chunk of whatever and turn it into… whatever
That's more than a lot of people can say.

I'd say it is a credible first effort.
As far as the steel goes, files are generally made of high carbon steel (1 to 1.5 percent Carbon). For example Nicholson Files are made from 1095.
So unless he knows exactly what the manufacturer of the file used, he wouldn't know the exact composition of the steel.

Thank you for the "shitty" critique russianshooter 😊. I will keep these points in mind on my next one.
Quenching in oil or water is not a problem unless you don't crack the blade. I have even edge quenched O1 in water without craking the blade. If you observe indian roadside blacksmiths they quench any steel in water with good results because they will almost always do an edge quench.

Don't get discouraged, parsha77
There is something very satisfying about creating something with your own hands.
If it makes you happy, that is all that matters.
It really doesn't matter what other people say.
