The Gingery Series of metal working books are pretty informative - they teach metal casting and how to make a lathe. You need to know that before you can do anything else.

Re: Learning gunsmithing
All the best, I hope you succeed in what you are trying to do, there is so much scope for an accomplished gunsmith in India. Despite a very slow paced change, the generation of new age gun owners will expect professionalism, which a well educated smith can offer.
As pointed out earlier there are only a few professional smiths, so the market place is not crowded.

Look into books by Jerry Kuhnhausen if they cover what you think you might repair or modify:
https://gunbooks.com
There are volumes 1 & 2 on bolt action rifles by Stuart Otteson that are very good.
Frank de Haas has some very good books out. One covers bolt action rifles and another covers single shot rifles.
You will need basic metalworking skills, along with how to operate lathes, drill presses, and other such machines.
